For some, self-harm might help them feel better, at least to start with, but over time this effect could disappear and be replaced with feelings of hopelessness, burdensomeness and suicidal thoughts. The safest thing to do is not make assumptions about what is happening to someone who is self-harming – listening carefully and nonjudgmentally is vital. Self-harm is a sign of serious emotional distress. You can ask open questions about their feelings. These can be as simple as ‘How are you feeling? Remember, this is about them expressing their emotions.

When One Person Controls the Relationship

Professionals are better equipped to help them understand why they harm themselves and what they are trying to accomplish with the behavior. There is also evidence that briefer interventions, such as safety planning or what we call a ‘volitional helpsheet’, can also be effective for some people who self-harm. These brief interventions support people to consider the triggers for their self-harm and to think about strategies that they can use to keep themselves safe when they sense a crisis is escalating. Although these are usually completed by a mental health professional, if you have a friend or family member who is struggling, they can be useful tools .

What Causes Self-Sabotaging in Relationships?

Some people are in full denial about their behaviors, even when you have solid, objective evidence that confirms what they have been doing. When your loved one is invested in continuing a behavior, they may act in ways that are selfish and even attempt to “protect” their actions by lying to you. One of the most important things to come to terms with is that no matter how much you love someone, you don’t have the power to make them give up a behavior they are not ready to relinquish. And no matter how much your partner loves you, it’s extremely difficult for them to let go of a self-harming behavior that provides short-term relief or a sense of numbing or self-soothing.

Approximately 17% of adolescents, 13% of young adults, and 6% of adults report a lifetime history of non-suicidal self-injury, or the deliberate harming of one’s body tissue without intending to die. However, not enough is known about the drivers and clinical features of self-harming behavior, and there is no standard therapy approach for the condition. In the DSM-5, non-suicidal self-injury is identified as a condition for future study.

Those kind of people will wear scarves, turtlenecks, or something that hides the neck. Usually, people who self-harm will try to hide the fact they do. In some cases, self-harm can be a cry for help, but this doesn’t make it any less serious. Some people consider suicide attempts a form of self-harm. Supporting someone in the longer term

When you first learn that a friend or loved one is self-harming, see if they are ready to seek professional help from a psychiatrist, psychologist, or counselor. These professionals have special training to help people combat behaviors in their lives that are bringing harm. If your friend insists that they are not crazy, agree with them. Tell them that people see mental health professionals for many life issues, and many times for self-growth. If your friend is worried about the stigma of seeing a mental health professional, suggest they see someone who is not right in town. It is a valid and helpful service that can truly help them with their problem.

If you are concerned that someone is self-harming , don’t be afraid to talk to them or ask them directly – conversations can get them the help that they need, and can save lives. People self-harm for many different reasons and motives. It is always a sign of distress and should not be dismissed as attention-seeking.

Remember, someone who self-harms doesn’t want to die. But if you aren’t sure if someone you love self-harms or feels suicidal, it’s best to be cautious and get help immediately. Lastly, I desperately encourage you to speak to someone. It feels like you have nothing to say, and that’s okay. But sometimes there are things that you need to say that you don’t even know about! If you can’t bring yourself to do this, write it out.

Instead, keep talking to your friend and encouraging them to share with a trusted adult. If someone opens up and tells you they are self harming, the first helpful thing to do is to not act shocked or surprised.
